Alcohol and Cancer webinar – What’s at stake in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan?

The webinar is hosted by Jytte Guteland MEP and co-organised with IOGT-NTO, United European Gastroenterology, European Cancer Leagues and European Alcohol Policy Alliance. The seminar was held online 10.00-11.15 on 22 September 2020.

Every day in EU+ countries around 800 people die from alcohol attributable causes and the main cause of these deaths (29%) is cancer. According to Eurobarometer study (2010) one in five Europeans did not believe there was an association between drinking and cancers, and roughly one in ten did not know of a link.

The seminar Alcohol and Cancer – What’s at stake in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan? Will examine how Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan can strengthen EU and Member State capacity to prevent alcohol-related cancer. It will ask what needs to be done to raise awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer, how the EU can lead by example when it comes to action against alcohol related harm and which objectives and instruments could be put forward in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related cancers.

Speakers will include S&D ENVI-coordinator Jytte Guteland MEP, a Commission representative, medical doctors working on and with alcohol-attributable cancers, a Member State representative as well as a representative from a European cancer organisation. We expect the event to be attended by MEP-offices, Member State representatives and key civil society stakeholders interested in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

Please note that spaces are limited.
